The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is providing a federal grant in the amount of $60,530 to the Snowville Volunteer Fire Department. “This provision of federal funding will enable the Snowville Volunteer Fire Department to purchase new turnout gear for its members as well as new extrication equipment to assist the Department in responding to automobile accidents,” U.S. Representative Rick Boucher said.
With the benefit of the federal funds, the Department will purchase 10 new sets of turnout gear, which includes pants, shirts, coats, coveralls, helmets, goggles, pairs of boots, and sets of gloves. The new turnout gear will replace older sets of turnout gear which have become worn due to age.
Additionally, the federal funding will assist the Department in purchasing new extrication equipment. Currently, the Department’s extrication equipment is operated by a gasoline engine, which can be dangerous at the scene of a motor vehicle accident. The new equipment will be operated by a battery and will allow members to respond to an accident more safely and efficiently.
The Snowville Volunteer Fire Department has 33 members, all of whom serve on a voluntary basis. The Department provides fire protection to 80 square miles in Pulaski County.
“I am pleased that the Department of Homeland Security has provided this funding to the Snowville Volunteer Fire Department. It is important to ensure the safety of our fire and rescue personnel, and today’s announcement will help further this goal,” Boucher concluded.
