The format of The Listening Room was slightly altered for the November 4th episode. Rather than interviewing a local musician or band, Tim W. Jackson invited Taryn Chase to join him in hosting an “Election Special.”
Essentially they devoted the show to encourage listeners who hadn’t voted yet to get out to the polls. And in between, they played a selection of songs about how important the voice of the people truly is–including songs by artists such as John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Leela James, Bob Marley, Johnny Cash, Ben Lee, and the Black-Eyed Peas.
While everyone may not be satisfied with the outcome of the election, those of us who participated by volunteering or voting can all be proud of the numbers of folks who turned out. If only our nation can keep this level of enthusiasm and show continued ownership over our government.

There aren’t many people playing the psaltery these days, but Floyd singer Nico Woodruff is one of them. Woodruff mixes traditional celtic sounds with vocals influenced by Joni Mitchell and other great folk singers. Be sure to check out Tim’s conversation with Nico and visit her MySpace page at www.myspace.com/nicolecooleywoodruff.

You’ll learn a lot about songwriting by listening to Tim’s interview with Andrew Gregory. This Radford native lives in New York City now, and plays with The Gregory Brothers as well, but made time during one of his visits to Virginia to play a few songs in the studio. You’ll recognize the riff from his tune “Bad Habit” as The Listening Room’s theme song. Visit his website, www.andrewgregorymusic.com, for more information.

Join Tim as he interviews Floyd fiddler and songwriter Mike Mitchell. Mike’s sound is so authentic Appalachian that it’s hard to believe he’s originally from Canada (although you might catch a whiff of Gordon Lightfoot in his vocals). Mitchell operates the Floyd Music School and also performs with the band Blue Moonshine.

Check out Tim’s interview with Blacksburg songwriter, Kat Mills. Originally from northern Virginia, Mills has taken her music all over but considers southwest Virginia home. She’s a FloydFest favorite and an artist we’re grateful to have in the New River Valley.
