Snowville Christian Church Hosts Homecoming

September 8th, 2010 · No Comments

The public is invited to Snowville Christian Church’s Annual Homecoming Service and Luncheon this Sunday, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. The church is located at 5485 Lead Mine Road in Snowville.

Special music will be provided by Mike Shockley. The Rev. Jonathan (Jon) Barnes, a member of Seventh Street Christian Church in Richmond will provide the message.

Barnes and his wife, the Rev. Dawn Barnes, recently returned from the Kei Regional Council of the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA), and are now preparing for their new assignment to the UCCSA in Mozambique.

Snowville Christian Church was established in 1833 by Dr. Chester Bullard, brother in law of Asiel Snow, founder of Snowville. It was the first Christian Church west of the Alleghany Mountains and was known in religious circles as “The Jerusalem of the Southwest.” After reading some of Alexander Campbell’s writings, Bullard concluded that they were both preaching the same doctrine. In 1839, when Bullard learned that Campbell was to preach in Charlottesville, he rode horseback to hear him and thereafter joined the Restoration Movement.

The public is welcome and encouraged to attend this homecoming celebration.
