A new course in sports, entertainment, and recreation marketing (MKT 209) will begin Aug. 25 at New River Community College’s NRV Mall site in Christiansburg. The class will be held Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m.
The course will be taught by Kim Radford, a marketing teacher at Blacksburg High School and member of the NRCC marketing department advisory committee.
Nancy Evans, associate professor of marketing at NRCC, says the course is being offered in part because there are a number of job opportunities in the region that utilize sports, entertainment, and recreation marketing skills. Evans cites civic centers, recreational businesses, and King’s Dominion as examples of organizations where students might apply their knowledge.
The course will build on the principles of marketing to introduce the more specific importance and specialization of sports, entertainment and recreation (SER) marketing. MKT 209 will emphasize the sports, entertainment, and recreation industries as they relate to economics, business structure, product development, branding, sponsorships, endorsements, pricing strategies, distribution strategies, integrated communications, ethics, and research. Students will also examine promotional needs surrounding SER events.
Enrollment is now in progress at nr.edu.
