At 8:30 a.m. today an apartment building manager located a suspicious device in the 500 block of Downey Street in Radford
City of Radford Police were contacted and determined it to be a potential improvised explosive device. Virginia state police bomb technicians responded and disrupted the device.
The device consisted of two plastic bottles duct taped together, both containing an unknown liquid. The bottles had wires inserted into them and a gas grill ignitor button was attached.
Evacuations of surrounding buildings was not necessary due to the location of the device, but residents were asked to stay inside during the incident as a precaution. A two-block section of Downey Street was closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The street has since been reopened.
While the device appeared to be a hoax, evidence has been recovered and sent for forensic analysis. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Radford police crime tip line at 540.731.3627.
