On Saturday July 17, 40 artists participated in the annual Art at the Market event hosted by Downtown Blacksburg, Inc. Coupled with the Breakfast at the Farmers Market, this event of more than 25 years drew crowds of art and food lovers.

In addition to being a sidewalk show and sale, Art at the Market is a judged event. Here are the winners:

Two Dimensional Category

1st Place: Kirk Carter – “Poetic sensibility is translated through his photography.”

2nd Place: Melissa Rudge – ” Fresh and funky paintings that reveal new narratives each time you revisit them.”

3rd Place: George Wills – “Graphic scenes of Downtown Blacksburg on small boxes.”

Honorable Mention: Makayla Songer- “Small abstract paintings and illusions.”

Three Dimensional Category

1st Place: Becca Imbur – “Especially for her handmade book Orange #2 – comical and insightful juxtapositions of words and their definitions.”

2nd Place: Evan Beloni – “Creative use of salvaged and recycled materials to create rhythmic abstract sculptures alongside whimsical creatures.”

3rd Place: Jennifer Lovejoy – “Displayed exceptional craftsmanship and unique vision through her chosen medium.”

Honorable Mention: Dale Norton – “Highlighted the beauty and natural forms found in the wood.”

The event was judged by Leila Cartier, who has degrees from Moore College of Art & Design and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Cartier is a Jacob K. Javits Fellow and recipient of the Community Associates of the Art Institute of Chicago Scholarship. She is currently the Curator of Fine Art at William King Museum and Adjunct Professor of Art History at Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon.
