RU Celebrates Women’s History

March 4th, 2010 · No Comments

March is National Women’s History Month and Radford University is hosting a month-long series of events coinciding with the university’s Centennial Year Celebration. The opening reception, which also celebrated the 10th anniversary of RU’s Women’s Studies Program, was Monday in Muse Banquet Hall featuring guitarist and RU graduate student Martha Radike-Craig.

The National Women’s History Project’s theme is “Writing Women Back into History.” RU’s project is “Writing Women Back into History: Know Your History/Know Yourself: Build the Future.”

Closing ceremonies will be on Sunday, March 31, 4 p.m., in Muse Banquet Hall. Featured speaker will be memoirist and activist Judy Ayyildiz. Her work has appeared in the New York Quarterly, Mickle Street Review, Sow’s Ear, Pig Iron Press, Black Water Review, Northeast Journal, Kallipe and other publications.

Other scheduled events include the Circle of Life/Intergenerational Dialogue, the Her-Story Listserve and “Paradigm Shift: An Evening of Women’s Work.”

One of the most popular annual projects of the celebration is the listserve, an online network of writers and readers who share and engage in stories about women or aspects of their lives that affect other women. Each day subscribers will receive an essay, character sketch, photo journal or poem submitted by a community member. Tributes are composed by RU students, faculty and staff and entries will be accepted throughout the month. To subscribe, e-mail wstudies@radford.edu.

Events featuring diverse programming including presentations in the performing arts can be viewed online.
