Literacy Volunteers Sets Book Sale Dates

January 22nd, 2010 · No Comments

Mark your calendar and clean your bookcases for the Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley (LV-NRV) Annual Book Drive, which will be held at the New River Valley (NRV) Mall on Friday, Feb. 12, 7 a.m.-9 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 13, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

Collection of used books will take place near the outside entrance to the food court.  Donors are encouraged to use this entrance (also near the New River Community College’s mall location) to off-load their books.  Volunteers will be on site to provide assistance.

Donated books will be sold at the 12th Annual Used Book Sale, Feb. 25-28, at the NRV Mall. Proceeds from the sale will be used to defray program expenses for providing free literacy help in the NRV to adults who struggle with reading and writing and for adults who speak another language but have difficulty with English.

LV-NRV provides free help to adults to achieve independence through literacy. Students in Montgomery, Giles, Floyd, and Pulaski counties and the City of Radford, with the help of their volunteer tutors, are learning to read newspapers, sending e-mail messages, filling out job applications, obtaining drivers licenses, understanding doctors’ orders, and just reading for pleasure, among other achievements in literacy.

LV-NRV is a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt organization and a certified locally based affiliate of ProLiteracy. For additional information on donating books to LV-NRV or for information on  becoming a volunteer or referring a potential student, call 540.382.7262.
