Speed Date with a FloydFest Act: Barling and Collins

July 21st, 2009 · No Comments

barlingcollins.jpgBand name? Barling and Collins, though people around Charlottesville usually just call us B.C. (Apparently, there’s another band called “B.C.” somewhere in southeast Virginia, but we are most definitely not them. I checked.)

Where is the band based? That’d be Charlottesville.

Where do you typically tour? Since forming in 1996, we’ve played at least twice weekly everywhere from downtown to the University Corner (about 2/3 of a mile) but mostly downtown. We had an incredibly inappropriate Applebee’s gig for a couple months there. Frankly, we’d love to get out of town more. Know a place we can crash?

What’s your most recent CD? 2004’s Puberty and Justice for All. (We are long overdue.)

Are you signed to a label? Sure, we’ll sign with your label. Do you use good caterers?

Who are your musical influences? Garcia, Zappa, Newman, Waits, Wilson, Lennon, Shankar, Ma (as in Yo Yo). That squeaky noise sneakers make on basketball court lacquer. (Though we are not sports fans.)

Who are some musical acts that sound like you? We sound just like all the coolest bands of mid-late 2004. Really, we vary stylistically from tune to tune, none of it authentically anything. People have compared us to Tenacious D or Ween, but we’re snobs so we deny we ever heard any of their stuff (and that’s pretty much the case).

Why should I come see you? The Barling and Collins song “American as F***” was rated No. 2 All-Time “Must Hear” Charlottesville songs (of 45 - suck that, Dave Matthews) in a recent issue of C-Ville. Pretty sure that’s not definitive, but we’ll take it. No. 1 was Atsushi Miura’s “I Hate Charlottesville,” and guess what? That’s right, Barling and Collins were 2/3 of Miura’s band: the Dirty Round Eyes. Eat it, Billboard flavor of the decade megabuck superheroes!

Why should I come see you? We lean toward funny or at least stupid. We make a surprising lot of noise for an acoustic guitar and cello duo. Brandon Collins may be the most exciting cellist you’ll hear outside a classical performance.

When will you be playing? Friday 2-2:45 p.m. Beer Garden; Saturday, 8:15-9 p.m. V.I.P stage

What are you most looking forward to about playing at FloydFest? Meeting interesting people, networking, hearing our heroes and a ton of incredible bands at Virginia’s finest all-out laid-back righteous mountaintop rock festival and, of course, ROCKING THE LIVING STUFFING OUT OF ANYONE WHO DARES STAND IN OUR WAY! (Vote Barling and Collins! We lust you!)
