Shawsville Offers Solstice Celebration

summer_clipart_sun.gifFor some, the summer solstice marks another opportunity to commemorate life on this planet.

Virginia Tech professor of food science and technology Lori Marsh is one to celebrate the event. She has held celebrations in Shawsville periodically since 1996 for spring, summer, and fall.

Marsh initially began organizing such celebrations for the members of the Community for Spiritual Living, a local non-denominational church, and although it disbanded in 2007, Marsh has continued to coordinate a get-together.

“I believe it is important to pause in our lives and not the passing of time and take stock of where we are currently and where we want to be in the future,” Marsh said. “I believe that it helps one to live an examined life. Solstice and equinoxes are a logical time to do so.”

Although the celebration was traditionally for the members of her church and those who take part in the Dances of Universal Peace, she extends an open invitation to those in the New River Valley. Marsh said she maintains the tradition of gathering around a fire circle to “speak from the heart” and exchange energy.

“Anyone who comes with a loving spirit and wants to experience the joy of nature and community [is invited],” Marsh said. “All who attend are invited to bring contributions in the form of story, song, drumming, etc.”

Those who attend are encouraged to bring food, music, and stories to share with the rest of the contributors.

“Participants will experience inner peace; a sense of community; and a desire to express joy, love, and compassion in the world,” Marsh said.

Marsh can be contacted at marshes@vt.edu. The event will be held at 1818 Lizard Creek Hollow in Shawsville. The celebration will begin around 7:30 p.m. and end around 10 p.m.
