Oscah performs at RU April 30.“I’m here to heal and reveal love.”—Oscah

In Southwest Virginia, finding an R&B artist even in the musical venues that are offered throughout the area is very rare.

Oscah, an R&B soul performer will be headlining Radford University’s spring concert this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Preston Auditorium. He has been featured at WUVT’s Radio-a-thon held at Attitudes Bar & Café in Blacksburg, Roanoke’s Park Festival in 2007, and several clubs and lounges in Long Beach, Calif.

His singing style has been compared to Al Green, J’Davey, ATCQ, O’ Bryan, and Marvin Gaye. His songs include “Do U Right,” “I.O.U.,” “Seasons Change,” “Don’t Stop Your Love,” and “All the Way.”

Oscah, dubbed as the Minister of Soul Music, hasn’t always had this title although music has played a big part of his entire life. Oscar Weston was born in Ashville, N.C., and at the age of 12 he moved to the Eastside of Long Beach. As a teen, the course of his life became focused when he received a record player from his grandmother.

As he listened to vintage albums and sung along with them, the music helped hone his craft and changed his inner self.

In 2002, Weston graduated Long Beach City College with a Certification of Commercial Music/Record Production. This drove him toward becoming a musician. In 2004, he moved to Christiansburg, where he rediscovered Jesus Christ, not only increasing his faith and calling but is also his inspiration to his music as well.

Oscah’s debut single “Do U Right” has been the fruit of his labor and has opened the doors into his career as a musician. You can hear Oscah’s debut single and many other songs April 30.

Brian Seay is an intern at the New River Voice.
