There is still a little space available for this free stream habitat assessment training session to be held this Saturday in Roanoke and Vinton.  Trout Unlimited is hosting this training as part of its Glade Creek Restoration efforts. Snacks and lunch will be provided. This is a great opportunity to learn more about stream habitat and structure and to enhance and protect water quality.

Things to bring or be prepared for:

1)      Prepare to get wet. By necessity these activities have to take place in the stream, we will be wading.  Wear waders (preferably with felt soles). Bring an additional change of clothes if needed.
2)      Bring something to write with (preferably pencil).
3)      Bring something to write on (a clip board or notebook).
4)      Bring a camera if you like (keep in mind if you fall, your camera may go in with you).
5)      Bring a GPS if you have one (again, if you fall it may go in with you).
6)      A wading stick if you want one.
7)      A 25 ft measuring tape if you have one.
8)      Anything else you might need (sunscreen, hats, raingear, insect repellent etc).

SCHEDULE:
9:00 – 9:15 AM – Volunteers arrive at General Shale
9:30 -10:30 AM – Training in Glade Creek downstream of crossing.
10:30-11:00 AM – travel to Vinton – snacks and drinks during ride, time for folks to have restroom break.
11:00-12:30 PM – Assess First and Second Reaches (one Glade, one Tinker)
12:30-1:00 PM – LUNCH (Bag Lunch, coolers with drinks available) and discussion of results while eating.
1:00 – Adjourn

Directions:

First Site: Meet at 9:00am – 2353 Webster Road (at General Shale)

To get to General Shale:
1. Take Rt. 460 (Orange Ave.) east from Roanoke to the intersection with Alt. 220 (next to Walmart)
2. Continue east on Rt. 460 (toward Bedford) for about 1 mile, turn right on Webster Rd.
3. Go about 2.5 miles to General Shale, go by large stacks of bricks, meet at Office (on left) at 9:00 am

Second Site: Meet at 11:00am – Walnut Street -

From first site to second site:
1. Proceed southwest on WEBSTER ROAD (toward Roanoke) for approximately 2.4 miles
2. Turn SLIGHT LEFT onto US-221 S/ US-460 W/ BLUE RIDGE BLVD. Continue to follow US-221 S/ US-460 W for approximately 4.2 miles
3. Turn LEFT onto GUS W NICKS BLVD NE and go 0.3 mile
4. Turn RIGHT onto OLD VINTON MILL RD NE and go 0.1 mile
5. Turn RIGHT onto CARVIN ST NE and go 0.2 mile
6. Turn LEFT onto MIDWAY ST NE and go 0.1 mile
7. MIDWAY ST NE becomes 8TH ST and go 0.3 mile
8. Turn LEFT onto WALNUT AVE and go 0.1 mile
9. Park in the field on your RIGHT

Travel time: approximately 15 minutes
