Voicemail: Professor Shares Letter to Kyle, Stanton

April 6th, 2009 · No Comments

Dear Editor,

Below is a letter I wrote to Radford University President Penelope Kyle and Provost Wil Stanton.

I am a professor of Sociology at Walters State Community College and an Appalachian studies scholar and activist. I want to ask you to take the time to think about the contributions of the Radford Appalachian studies program to our society. I want you to consider keeping the program and the minor.

For the last 20 years I have worked with some of the greatest scholars and statesmen in American history through the Appalachian Studies Association and Appalachian studies programs in the region.

The multiplier effects of the work of the association and programs have been at the forefront of progressive change and leadership in the nation and region. We must also not forget the contributions of the field to scholarship in almost every academic discipline. I have attended sessions where Radford’s service learning programs have been discussed for instance.

I know from my own school that programs are at risk and student enrollment is being looked at from a watchful eye. However, I hope you will consider looking into the important role the Radford program in Appalachian studies plays at your school and in the area.

Thank you,

Dr. Chris Baker
Professor of Sociology
Walters State Community College
Morristown, Tenn.
