The first annual Illumination Ceremony at Radford University had a bright turnout Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Overall about 75 people attended the quick two-minute ceremony, 20 of which were faculty, as President Kyle gave the signal to turn on the Holiday Lights strung all around campus.
Then the Happy Holidays Singers’ joyous notes of The First Noel were heard and drew in many students just passing by outside on campus. After the choir was finished, Kyle announced that more holiday music and hot chocolate was to be found at the reception in the brand new Covington Center for Visual and Performing Arts. The brevity of the event was ideal for the freezing weather and snow.
A few students gave their impressions of what is planned to be an annual event.
“Being the Illumination Ceremony, it is surprising there is no Christmas tree near Muse and McConnell, but [it is instead] where all the construction is at Heth Circle and less students go,” said RU senior John Conway.
“Everyone loves Christmas lights, this is another good way to connect students with the university using something appealing to the students,” said RU junior Elyse Hart.
“I think its ridiculous that we stood out in the cold just to flip a light switch,” said RU freshman Ian Elliot.
“I think adding the choir was a great idea, it really brought home the feeling of the holidays,” said RU sophomore Kelly Smith.
“I don’t know what else could have been included but the ceremony just seemed too short and informal to make it an annual event,” said Ryan Lopez.
