Tom Perriello went to sleep last night ahead of U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode, R-Rocky Mount, by less than 1,000 votes. He woke up this morning trailing behind the six-term incumbent by about 300 votes. In the aftermath of the Republican defeat Tuesday, Chief Deputy Whip Eric Cantor of Virginia plans to seek the all-important Minority Whip post, a position he has been rumored to covet for weeks, according to sources close to the Congressman. For the Montgomery County School Board, Phyllis T. Albritton won the seat with 72.36 percent of the vote to B. Amy Davey Mauldon’s 26.84 percent.
Tuesday, Nov. 5: 10:31 a.m.
Pulaski County residents in the Massie District and Robinson District voted to allow the sale of mixed alcoholic beverages by restaurants licensed by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. Those two districts were the only two in Pulaski County that did not allow the sale of mixed alcoholic beverages by restaurants. The Yes vote got 65.45 percent to 34.54 percent for the No vote.
Tuesday, Nov. 5: 10:24 a.m.
With 99 percent of precincts reporting in Virginia, Barack Obama has 51.7 percent of the vote to John McCain’s 47.25 percent. No third-party candidate got more than a third of one percent of the vote. Ralph Nader leads third-party candidates with .31 percent.
For the U.S. Senate, Mark Warner leads with 64.35 percent of the vote while Jim Gilmore has 34.34 percent.
Rick Boucher, who ran unopposed for the 9th District’s Congressional seat has 97.41 percent of the vote with the remainder going to write-in candidates.
