Haunts of Floyd

October 5th, 2008 · 2 Comments

History buffs and the paranormal curious will be pleased to learn that ghost tours are now available in Floyd every Friday and Saturday evening at 7 p.m. until Saturday, Nov. 8. An 8 p.m. tour will be available on Oct. 24, 25, 31 and Nov. 1. The cost is $6 per person.

The New River Voice was able to get a sneak preview of the tour, hosted by Cameron and Coriander Woodruff–two young people who have performance experience with the Young Actors Co-op. Both were dressed for the occasion, donning dark suits and hats, and while they were still perfecting this presentation filled with strange characters and mystery, we trust the tour will hit the spot with participants gearing up for the Halloween season.

Some of the stories recounted include sightings of Civil War soldiers, jail house clangs, balls of fire, and even inexplicable breakfast smells. Along the way, participants learn the origins of old buildings, such as the old funeral home, or the ice cream and hat parlor. One gets a sense that the Floyd area has always been unique, and it seem all the more fitting that the place retains its earthy spirituality.

Not only was there an extraordinary amount of regional history included, but a surprising number of connections to well-known names, including Edgar Allan Poe, Patrick Henry, and Edgar Cacey. The material for the tour comes from a book called Strange Tales of Floyd County, edited by Patricia Robin Woodruff. Since the book was published, more and more tales have found their way to the author’s ears–so keep your eyes peeled for another volume at some point.

As for the tour, be aware that it is a walking tour that lasts about an hour. There are no scary things jumping out at you, but some of the stories are gruesome, so parental discretion is advised. Private tours may be arranged for groups of more than 5 people by calling 540.745.7433. Tours leave from Black Water Loft (above noteBooks), 117 S. Locust Street, Floyd. Happy Hauntings!

Taryn Chase is a huge fan of Paranormal State on A&E and hopes the team will hear one of these tales and come investigate.
