August 13th, 2008 · No Comments

Saturday, August 23, you’ll want to head from the Burg (and elsewhere) toward Floyd. There, you are in for a treat because The Old Ceremony plays at 8 PM in the Sun Music Hall.

If you’ve heard The Old Ceremony in Blacksburg or Roanoke, you already know how enjoyable an evening with them can be. The Old Ceremony bills itself as follows:

The Old Ceremony draws their water from a deep well of music ranging from the Beatles to Beck, Leadbelly to Led Zeppelin. Unorthodox instrumentation meets superb songwriting, to create a unique interpretation of rock’n'roll. After two highly acclaimed albums and three years of touring, the Chapel Hill, NC band has built a large and loyal following. TOC has performed with CAKE, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Chuck Berry, Polyphonic Spree, Mountain Goats, and Avett Brothers, and was included in PASTE Magazine’s “Top 100 Albums of 2006.”

TOC is figureheaded by songwriter/raconteur Django Haskins, and includes bassist Matt Brandau, drummer Dan Hall, vibes/organist Mark Simonsen, violinist Gabriele Pelli and cellist Josh Starmer.

TOC gets its name from a Leonard Cohen song. And, you’ll find some Cohen influences in TOC. But more that that, TOC has created a unique sound. You can check them out at their website: The Old Ceremony. also see their MySpace page. There you’ll find audio of their music, “Poison Pen,” “Pennsylvania,” Papers in Order,” and “Get to Love.” Expect new songs too.
