Now Playing: Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Another comedy from Judd Apatow, think 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, hit the big screen recently. A mix of R-rated and raunchy comedy with a twist of love lessons and relationship problems makes Forgetting Sarah Marshall a humorous and satisfying movie. Lead actor Jason Segel (Peter) wrote the script and first-timer Nicholas Stoller was the director.

When Peter, a composer, gets dumped by his television actress girlfriend, Sarah (Kristen Bell), he ends up both emotionally and physically naked. I will give a forewarning, be prepared to see full frontal nudity, very rare in mainstream movies and quite awkward for some. After resorting to meaningless hook-ups and crying, yes crying, Peter decides he needs to escape and what better place to do so than Hawaii. Surprise! Sarah and new boyfriend Aldous (Russell Brand), an English pop star, are there on vacation.

Following a predictable yet amusing story line, Peter falls for the girl at the front desk (Mila Kunis). However, the film takes an anything-could-happen turn. Many subplots call for ridiculous situations, only making the viewer wonder how “these guys think of this stuff.” Paul Rudd, Bill Hader, and Jonah Hill, Apatow movie regulars, show up in the movie. Rudd as a surfing instructor who is forgetful and out-there, Hill as the hotel waiter with a somewhat scary crush on Aldous, and Hader as Peter’s friend.

Apatow again focuses on the immature, humorous male characters, leaving the females as humor-impaired, but Bell and Kunis do bring a funny dimension to their roles. The laughs keep coming and so do the shocking and sometimes random subplots. This isn’t a movie I would recommend to take grandma or the kids to see or even go to on a first date. But if you have enjoyed Apatow’s other films I would definitely recommend going to see this.

Holly Hinte has been an intern for the New River Voice this semester and a tremendous help, so we finally unchained her so she could go see a movie—that she paid for, of course. Happy graduation, Holly!
