As was mentioned here and in the print version of the Voice, we did make it down to Charlotte last week to see The Greencards and The Everybodyfields in concert. It was a great show.
Interestingly, the Grammy-nominated Greencards, who are definitely the bigger name, performed first, and The Everybodyfields finished the show. I was hoping maybe The Greencards’ Eamon McLoughlin (fiddle) or Kym Warner (mandolin) would join The Everybodyfields on stage for one or two songs but that didn’t happen. The concert took place in downtown Charlotte at the McGlohon Theatre at Spirit Square Center for Arts & Education, which is a great venue.
The McGlohon Theatre seats 700 and was the former First Baptist Church. With its stained glass windows, Byzantine dome, and great acoustics, this historically designated space is perfect for an intimate concert.
The Greencards had their usual mix of high-energy tunes with only a couple slower numbers. And they included their standard cover of Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” a song that vocalist Carol Young has made her own.
The Everybodyfields offer a slower slice of Americana, with intense songs about loneliness and loss. Managing Editor Taryn Chase even shed a few tears during a song or two. The band ended with a fascinating cover of Lionel Richie’s “Stuck on You,” in which vocalist Sam Quinn (who may be a cross between Beck and a Who from Whoville), couldn’t resist changing a couple of words.
The Greencards will be back in the area soon, playing at 202 Market in Roanoke April 2. Definitely mark your calendar for that date! We’ll post more on that soon. The Everybodyfields have no dates near the NRV coming up, but they will be in Norfolk on April 11 and in Asheville, N.C., on April 12. And then this summer they will be in Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and also at FloydFest.
